Bentonite Features and Applications

Bentonite has good a reputation in the powder industry as "all-round soil". This might sound a bit extreme, but it proves that bentonite powder is suitable for many industries.

Bentonite a non-metallic mineral with 85~90% montmorillonite, and a small amount of illite, kaolinite and halloysite, etc. It typically in white or light yellow,sometimes with light red, light green, etc., which mainly determined by the iron content. It will swell tens of times meeting with water.

The property of bentonite is mainly determined by montmorillonite. Bentonite grinding mill is necessary for powder production. According to the type, content and interlayer charge of montmorillonite exchangeable cations, bentonite can be divided into sodium bentonite (alkaline soil), calcium bentonite (alkaline soil) and natural bleaching clay (acid soil or acid clay). Among them, calcium bentonite includes calcium sodium base and calcium magnesium base.

In addition, bentonite has a strong hygroscopicity and swelling property, and can adsorb 8 to 15 times water more than its own volume, and the volume after expansion is 30 times than before. In addition to liquids, bentonite also has a certain adsorption force on gases and organic substances, and the adsorption amount can reach 5 times its own weight. 1. Lon exchange property: used to remove toxins from cooking oil, purify gasoline kerosene and treat wastewater;

2. Water swelling property: used for drilling mud, flame retardant (suspended fire extinguishing), and can be used as filler in the paper-making industry, optimize the performance of the coating, can also be used as waterproof materials, such as bentonite waterproof blanket, bentonite waterproof board;

3. Bonding property: can replace the starch that used in the yarn sizing in the textile industry, this can save food and avoid napping.
